Peter and I are in South Africa for three weeks of exploration, including a visit to Keiskamma Trust, a grassroots organization in Eastern Cape, South Africa that we’ve been supporting for nearly a decade. Landing in Cape Town, we gear up our hiking legs and summit Lion’s Head in the rain one day and Table Mountain in wind that seems determined to blow us back down. The mountain’s fabled blanket of cloud shifts and swirls, allowing us just brief and tantalizing glimpses of the ocean, city and surrounding peaks. We also visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandala and hundreds more were imprisoned during the apartheid era. Sobering to think how recently that era ended. Cupped by looming mountains, this is a place that invites a hiker to view the paths already trod from new perspectives.
